Trauma-informed-care, by design, helps treatment providers with provision of services to individuals who have experienced trauma and trauma-related stressors. Considering, there is a high co-occurrence between substance use and trauma, it is important that those working with substance use populations understand the implications of trauma-informed-care to provide the highest quality of care to this unique group.

About Dr. Brian Couey
Dr. Brian Couey has more than 20 years’ experience in the addiction and integrated behavioral healthcare profession, working as both a licensed clinician and leader. He is currently an Executive Director with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit system of substance use treatment.
Dr. Couey is currently working in partnership with INTEGRIS Health, Oklahoma’s largest nonprofit healthcare system, to develop and operate Arcadia Trails INTEGRIS Center for Addiction Recovery in Edmond, OK. He earned his master's and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles, CA. He has been a special presenter for the ASAM annual conference and has published numerous articles on addiction and mental health issues, helping communities and professionals better understand these public health concerns. A Los Angeles native, he is an advisory board member for University of California San Diego’s addiction counseling training program and has been in long-term recovery for over 20 years.
